Linat an is a boiled pork soup dish that resembles Pork Nilaga. Although both dishes might sound the same, there are notable differences that can help us distinguish one from the other.

Linat an makes use of lemongrass (tanglad) and it also requires vegetables that are not present in Nilaga, such as: red bell pepper, string beans (sitaw), and taro root (gabi). As far as I am concerned, this soup dish is more of a Sinigang without a souring agent.

The lemongrass plays a great role in enhancing the flavor of this dish and the gabi makes the texture of the soup thicker, which I find enjoyable. If you have not tried to cook Linat-an before, I encourage you to give it a try. You’ll surely love it!

Hi. I scanned on your pork recipes and I found this linat-an recipe. My mom used to cook this recipe but in the different twist. Though it has some ingredients the same like the lemongrass, taro root and string beans. In the Visayas and Mindanao region this recipe is one of their specialties. They said this soup is very good to the body since they put a ginger ladyfinger Filipino pechay and oregano leaves. I was glad you know this recipe too. ☺ keep on posting more recipes Mr. Vanjo it helped me a lot. I enjoy cooking because I have a site to rely on. ☺

It’s easier to find yautia( or malanga, sato-imo, eddo or coco yam -- all the same) in Mexican stores, they are from the same arum family of plants.

your recipes always look so good. But it’s so hard for me to find some of the ingredients living in the states. any suggestions for a substitute for gabi?

Teddy, I too had the same issue. There is really no substitute for gabi. I travel around 50 minutes every weekend from my place to the largest and nearest Asian grocery to get my Filipino ingredients for the week.
