How are Onion Rings Made?

Onion rings are basically thick onion slices that are covered in batter and then fried until crispy. Many cooks prefer to use sweet onions but other types work just as well. The batter the onion rings are dipped in is typically made using eggs, oil and flour. The batter can be seasoned with your choice of herbs or spices for extra flavor.

Health Benefits of Onions

An average serving of onion rings contains plenty of vitamins B and C. Eating onions regularly can raise your energy, increase immunity and keep you looking younger. The specific type of vitamin B found in onions is known for protecting your nervous system and reducing the likelihood of strokes, heart diseases and high blood pressure.

Onions have decent amounts of calcium, folic acid, manganese and a little protein. This minerals and nutrients are necessary for bone strength, muscle health and lower cholesterol. For those with digestive problems, eating onions can provide soluble fiber, which aids the breakdown of food and normalizes bowel movements.

How to Make Onion Rings

It takes little effort to learn how to make onion rings. The ingredients of batter are minimal and basic. If you have a deep fryer, use it. If you don’t, using a large pot with high sides will suffice. You will need:

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 large onions
  • ½ tsp. salt

Instructions

  • Peel the onions and cut them into thick slices, about ¼-inch in thickness.
  • Combine oil with milk and a beaten egg in a bowl or food processor. Mix thoroughly until ingredients are well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, mix flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Stir the flour mixture into the milk mixture. Mix until it becomes a batter.
  • Fill a quarter to half a pot with cooking oil and heat. When hot, dip the onion rings one by one in batter and fry until brown and crispy. Serve.
