How to Cook Italian Sausage

Italian sausage is firm favorite not only in its home country, but in the United States as well. It is considered to be a kind of pork sausage, although it can be made with other meats. What is Italian Sausage Made of?

The original recipe for Italian sausage dates back centuries. Although it’s been modified many, many times, some basic ingredients still stay the same. Authentic Italian sausage is made with pork, anise and fennel. Anise is a seed and fennel is a vegetable, and both taste like liquorices.

The other ingredients in the sausage are left up to the cook. You can choose whether you want a hot or mild sausage. Hot Italian sausages are usually seasoned with spices like paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper, red flakes or chili powder. Alternatively, you can learn how to cook Italian sausage with mild herbs like thyme, rosemary and parsley.

Because pork is the primary ingredient, Italian sausage has similar nutrition to any pork cut. Pork has high amounts of protein and a decent amount of iron. Iron is very important for blood and cellular health, and can be increased by pairing sausages with Swiss chard, spinach, tomatoes and lentils.

How to Cook Italian Sausage

Italian sausage is best cooked using the stove top or oven. Both methods are very easy and quick. You will need:
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Italian sausage
  • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  • Divide the sausage into two batches. Add cooking oil into a large pan, coating the bottom.
  • Add sausage and arrange it to give each piece enough space. Boil water in a kettle and pour enough into the pan to cover sausages midway.
  • Cook covered over medium heat until the Italian sausage is uniformly brown. Serve.

How to Cook Italian Sausage in Oven

Step 1:

Preheat oven to 200 C or 400 F. defrost sausage at room temperature.

Step 2:

Place sausage on a baking sheet lined with foil. Make sure links have enough space between them.

Step 3:

Bake sausages until the top turn brown and cook on the other side. This can take anywhere between 15 and 60 minutes depending on the size of your sausage. Serve.
