What is Italian Sausage Made of?

The original recipe for Italian sausage dates back centuries. Although itโ€™s been modified many, many times, some basic ingredients still stay the same. Authentic Italian sausage is made with pork, anise and fennel. Anise is a seed and fennel is a vegetable, and both taste like liquorices.

The other ingredients in the sausage are left up to the cook. You can choose whether you want a hot or mild sausage. Hot Italian sausages are usually seasoned with spices like paprika, cayenne pepper, black pepper, red flakes or chili powder. Alternatively, you can learn how to cook Italian sausage with mild herbs like thyme, rosemary and parsley.

Health Benefits of Italian Sausage

Because pork is the primary ingredient, Italian sausage has similar nutrition to any pork cut. Pork has high amounts of protein and a decent amount of iron. Iron is very important for blood and cellular health, and can be increased by pairing sausages with Swiss chard, spinach, tomatoes and lentils.

Other nutrients in pork sausages include phosphorus and B vitamins essential for bone strengthening, kidney function, disease prevention and food conversion.
