Everyone loves baby showers because they are a chance to really celebrate the coming of a new-born. However even for super busy people, baby shower food can be both delicious and quick to get ready.

Melon and Grapes with Brie (10 minutes preparation, 1 minute to cook)

The number of people this delicious dish will serve will of course depend on the size of the fruit. You can use any types of melon in any combination, but a suggestion is one each of cantaloupe, honeydew and watermelon. Cut into peel free slices and combine with ยฝ lb seedless grapes. Serve with a dip of fromage frais. Cut the brie into wedges and melt under a grill on a piece of foil, before sliding on to the top of the fruits. Sprinkle with flaked almonds and serve.

You still have time to entertain your guests rather than having to slave in the kitchen with this baby shower food idea. Take 3 tablespoons of butter and mix with 3 tablespoons of light brown sugar, a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg. Brush over 4 peeled and quartered bananas and cook under a hot grill for 5 minutes. Serve with ice cream or whipped cream and mixed chopped nuts. Skewer the bananas to make them easier to eat.

Orange chestnut kebabs (preparation and cooking time 10 minutes)
This can be prepared in advanced and quickly cooked when your guests arrive. Take a large can of chestnuts and thread them onto wooden, soaked skewers. Mix ยผ cup of butter with 2 teaspoons of orange rind and brush over the chestnuts. Grill for 5 minutes, turning. Sprinkle with sugar a serve with whipped cream to dip them into.

Mini apple pies (15 minutes preparation and cooking time)

Make these in advance to save time. Cut filo pastry into 5 inch squares, brush with melted butter and place two or three squares on top of each other. Place a few fine slices of apple and a little ground cinnamon in the centre and scrunch together to make little purses. Brush with more melted butter and bake at 400Ffor 10 minutes, until crisp. You can fill these with already cooked savory fillings such as sausage meat or spicy ground beef, too.

Orange and lemon punch

Make this tasty drink ahead of time and chill in the refrigerator read for serving at your baby shower. Dissolve ยฝ cup superfine sugar over a gentle heat until golden brown. Remove from the heat and add 4 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice and 3 cups of water. Return to the heat, bring to the boil and then simmer for 3 minutes. Leave to cool then add four sliced oranges and chill.

Shortcake triangles

Take ready-made shortcake and sandwich together with whipped cream and chopped strawberries or other berries. Top with a swirl of cream and a little grated chocolate.
