BBQ Baby Back Ribs bring people to the table fast. The smell of the glaze on the grill tells everyone that dinner is ready. I like starting the ribs low and slow, then finishing them over direct heat so the sauce caramelizes nicely. I usually enjoy these with garlic fried rice for a satisfying meal that feels like a weekend cookout.

Getting to Know BBQ Baby Back Ribs
Baby back ribs come from the upper section of the rib cage and feel naturally tender. Slow heat softens the meat and a quick finish on the grill adds char and extra flavor. The first time I tried this method at home, the ribs came out glossy, the edges were a little sticky, and everyone reached for seconds. If you like rich sauces and smoky flavors, you will also enjoy pork barbecue which delivers the same mouthwatering sweetness on skewers.
Ingredients
For the Ribs
- 2 racks baby back ribs – tender pork ribs that cook well with gentle heat
- Salt – seasons the meat evenly
- Ground black pepper – adds mild heat and aroma
- Water – keeps the ribs moist during the first cook
For the Sauce
- Banana ketchup – brings sweetness and color
- Soy sauce – adds savoriness
- Brown sugar – deepens the glaze
- Garlic powder – builds aroma
- Onion powder – adds mild sweetness
- Lemon or calamansi juice – brightens the flavor
- Cooking oil – helps the glaze coat the meat
How to Cook BBQ Baby Back Ribs
- Prepare the ribs
Remove the thin membrane at the back of the ribs. Pat dry and season both sides with salt and pepper. - Simmer until tender
Place ribs in a large pot with enough water to cover them partially. Simmer gently until tender but still firm enough to hold shape. - Make the sauce
Combine banana ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, lemon juice, and oil in a bowl. Stir until smooth. - Brush and bake
Preheat oven to 375°F. Arrange ribs on a tray, brush with sauce, and bake for 20 minutes. Brush more sauce halfway through. - Grill to finish
Move ribs to a hot grill. Cook three to five minutes per side while brushing more sauce until glossy and caramelized. - Slice and serve
Rest briefly. Slice between the bones and serve hot with rice or grilled vegetables.
Honey Garlic Pork Chops
These pork chops shine with a buttery garlic honey sauce, crisp exterior and tender center, making them a comforting dinner that always means extra rice.
Pro Tips
Use these simple tips to get tender meat and a shiny glaze every time:
- Remove the membrane so seasoning penetrates and texture stays tender.
- Simmer the ribs before grilling for meat that pulls cleanly from the bone.
- Brush several thin layers of sauce instead of one thick coat.
- Keep the grill at medium heat so sugar in the glaze does not burn.
- Let the ribs rest before slicing to keep juices in the meat.

Substitutions and Variations
- Use honey instead of brown sugar for a smoother finish.
- Add chili flakes for gentle spice.
- Swap lemon for calamansi for local taste.
- Finish fully in the oven if you cannot grill, then broil to caramelize.
- Try country style ribs if baby back ribs are unavailable.
