KFC Style Gravy Recipe

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Positive feedbacks keep coming-in as a result of the different fried chicken recipes that we featured to date. Along with it are requests for a good gravy recipe to compliment the fried chicken. There isn’t any good gravy recipe that I can think of other than KFC’s so I tried whipping-up some ingredients to arrive at the closest copycat KFC Gravy recipe (in my opinion) using basic ingredients that should be available in your local supermarket.

Copycat KFC Gravy Recipe

While trying to browse the internet on this topic, I discovered several KFC gravy recipes that claim to be the closest. Though it might be true, these recipes require the use of canned beef gravy plus many other ingredients which I think is not practical at all. I find it unreasonable to use ready mix or canned gravy to arrive at another gravy variation, don’t you? Saving money is also an important factor; if there is a recipe that will cost less and still give me the taste that I’m looking for – why wouldn’t I go for it?

This gravy recipe that we have here works well with fried chicken and mashed potatoes. If you are one of those who think that gravy is some kind of soup, slurping this or mixing it with rice will work too.

KFC Style Gravy Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons butter or vegetable shortening
  • 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 piece chicken cube
  • 2 cups water

Instructions

  • Heat a saucepan and put-in the butter. Let the butter melt under low heat.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and cook in low heat while continuously stirring for 7 to 8 minutes or until the color turns medium brown. There is a tendency that the flour might burn when overcooked or if high heat is applied. Be extra cautious.
  • Add the remaining flour and continue stirring.
  • Gradually add water and chicken cube. Continuous stirring is needed to prevent lumps from forming.
  • Put the heat to medium and bring the mixture to a boil. Cook for 5 minutes more while stirring once in a while until the texture thickens.
  • Serve hot with fried chicken or mashed potato.
  • Share and enjoy!

I made this tonight as a last minute gravy. I wish i found this recipe long before now. I did make a few adjustments. I boiled the water and poured over one chicken cube and two beef cubes. Then did the butter and flour. I did add more salt and some pepper at the end. We all enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing!

I just made this gravy and it’s really awesome. I did a few modifications -- used butter spread instead of butter/shortening, used 2.5 teaspoons of chicken powder only (no beef), and used 2 cups (+ 3 tablespoons) of water. I also added pepper. Thanks for this recipe, it’s so easy and delicious for my mashed potato 🙂

Hi, just wanted to know if i can use this for other fried dishes too like fried pork chops. Or it’s only appropriate for fried chicken? If so, what sauce can you suggest i can use for fried pork chops? Will this gravy rcipe enhance the flavors for my fried pork chops? Or will give it a foul taste?

Jahsen, thanks for your question. This should be appropriate for fried pork chops too. I am not sure though about your comment regarding foul taste. Sauces should be able to enhance the flavor of dishes. If your dish has a foul taste then it might be with the manner that you prepared it.

Just to diffuse any tension here, I think the question may have meant the word “fowl”,as in ,chicken. I think they were asking if it would give too much of a chicken flavour to a pork dish. I don’t think they were disparaging your recipe! 🙂 (which is now bookmarked for me to try very soon)

Where do you get the chicken and beef powder from? Or is this another name for something else?

Chicken and beef powder are the actual products. These are similar to chicken bouillons. Knorr is my preferred brand. It can be found in the Hispanic isles of the supermarket.

As I just started living on my own, this website has been a big help. I now have endless recipes to choose from everyday. Thank you for that!

I have a question though, how long do you think this would keep frozen/in the refrigerator? Thanks again and God bless you!

Your recipe is so good! I just added lots of ground black pepper though. And my sisters and niece loved it. I partnered it with your recipe of Scotch eggs. Thank you for sharing. More power to you and God bless!
