Filipino Fruit Salad Recipe

For Pinoys, the term ‘Filipino Fruit salad’ instantly brings to mind a sweet treat: a colorful mix of canned fruits smothered in a rich blend of cream and milk. The best part? This classic dessert takes only 5 minutes to create, since all the ingredients are readily available at stores or markets โ€“ no need to start from scratch.

Expect sweetness and creaminess from fruit cocktail (canned mixed fruits), kaong (sugar palm fruit), and nata de coco (coconut gel) in this Filipino Fruit Salad Recipe.

Filipino Fruit Salad Recipe

Fresh coconut strips add a satisfying crunch, while diced cheese provides a pleasantly pungent contrast. In short, this Filipino Fruit Salad is the perfect antidote to rich celebration and holiday foods, refreshing your taste buds with every bite

How To Make A Filipino Fruit Salad

  1. Drain the syrup – Remove the syrup from the fruit cocktail, nata de coco and kaong. Trust me, you don’t want that extra sugar in your salad.
  2. Combine all ingredients โ€“ fruit cocktail, nata de coco, kaong, Carnation Condensed Milk, All-Purpose Cream, fresh coconut strips and diced cheese โ€“ in one big bowl. Gently mix until everything is incorporated.
  3. Chill it – Cover and refrigerate for 3 hours. This timeout lets the flavors to meld and textures to harmonize.
  4. Enjoy for dessert – Serve the Filipino Fruit Salad chilled. The creamy texture and sweetness will be a hit!

Tips & Tricks when serving Filipino Fruit Salad

  • Remember, chill your fruit salad in the fridge, but don’t freeze it! Freezing can make it icy and change the creamy texture.
  • To keep your Filipino Fruit Salad refreshingly chilled for your guests, place the serving bowl in a larger container filled with ice. This clever trick preserves the creamy texture and keeps the flavors fresh! You can also use thermally insulated containers.
  • For food safety and freshness, use shallow containers (about 1-2 inches deep) like stainless steel or glass bowls. They help cool things down fast, prevent bacteria from crashing the party and keep moisture at bay.
Filipino Fruit Salad

I personally enjoy this when chilled or frozen. Frozen fruit salad can have that ice cream like consistency, as long as it properly thawed before serving.

After a savory meal, having this as my dessert helps reset my palate. It is a great way to complete your meal.

Recommended Filipino Desserts to Try

  • Macaroni Salad – A creamy pasta salad with macaroni, mayonnaise and fruits.
  • Halo-Halo – A refreshing Filipino dessert mixing crushed ice, sweetened beans, fruits and creamy milk.
  • Fruit Cocktail Float – A colorful dessert featuring fruit cocktail, cream, and Graham crackers.
  • Graham Mango Float – Layers of graham crackers, sweetened cream and luscious mango slices create this iconic Filipino dessert.

Ingredients

  • 250 ml Nestle All Purpose Cream
  • 14 ounces Carnation Condensed Milk
  • 30 ounces fruit cocktail
  • 12 ounces kaong sugar palm
  • 12 ounces nata de coco coconut gel
  • 1 lb fresh coconut strips
  • 4 ounces cheese diced

Equipment

  • Refrigerator / Cooler for chilling

Instructions

  • Drain the syrup from the fruit cocktail, nata de coco, and kaong.
30 ounces fruit cocktail, 12 ounces nata de coco, 12 ounces kaong
  • Combine all the ingredients in a bowl.
250 ml Nestle All Purpose Cream, 14 ounces Carnation Condensed Milk, 1 lb fresh coconut strips, 4 ounces cheese
  • Gently fold the mixture until all ingredients are well blended.
  • Cover the bowl. Refrigerate for 3 hours.
  • Serve chilled. Share and enjoy!

Notes

  • Check the expiry date of canned goods. Itโ€™s easy to forget this, especially when you’re using a lot of canned items. Expired syrup can affect the smell and taste, even if the cream is fresh. I usually inspect the lids before opening and avoid any dents or bulges.
  • Go slow with folding. If you rush and stir everything fast, youโ€™ll crush the fruit and break the nata. I use a wide silicone spatula and turn the bowl slowly. That helps keep the ingredients whole and gives the salad a better final look.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container. Leaving it exposed in the fridge will dry out the surface of the cream. I cover it tightly or transfer to smaller sealed tubs. This helps it stay creamy for up to three days without separation.

I don’t cook not because I don’t like to cook but because I don’t have the know how, but lately I’d be hungry for my Filipino food and discovered Panlasang Pinoy and it had made a difference. If I get the craving for Filipino food I turn to you guys….I take baby steps with the cooking. I am now to a point where I can bring food that I cooked to work? Thank you very much!
