Just like my favorite chicken adobo, I always enjoy eating Sweet Chicken Asado for either lunch or dinner — I don’t even mind having the leftovers the next day for breakfast. This Sweet Chicken Asado was inspired by the pork asado recipe that I published back then when I was starting this food blog.

I am trying my best to limit my rice intake for some reason. However, there are times that I cannot control myself especially when dishes such as this is served in front of me; it’s just too good to ignore – I don’t want to regret it later on. I always know that the best way to eat dishes such as this sweet chicken asado is with warm white rice – so let there be rice and lots of it.

Eggs also go well with sweet chicken asado – I mean, you can have it with fried egg and rice for breakfast, or salted egg and rice for lunch. Sweet Chicken Asado, a piece of boiled egg, and a cup of rice sounds right for dinner. Yum!

Update: This recipe can be made less salty by using just 1 cup of chicken broth (instead of 2 cups), and adding 1 cup of water.

Try this Sweet Chicken Asado Recipe. Cheers!

Thanks for the feed back. Adding water is a good idea to balance the flavor or saltines of a dish.

Can I substitute star anise powder for star anise? How much powder would I use if I can substitute it for the real deal.

Sure Harvey, you can start by using around a quarter of a teaspoon of star anise powder, then you can add more if needed.

Hi, I am from the Philippines and 5 spice powder can be found in major groceries like SM, and Puregold. This is usually displayed together with other powder seasonings like ground pepper, garlic powder, etc. Hope this helps. Thanks to this yummy recipe too 🙂

Hackett, I am not sure if this is available there. I usually got these from Chinese drugstores when I was still there. Can anyone from the Philippines help answer Hackett’s question?

I am cooking this as I’m typing. The sauce is really very salty. Maybe I should use 1 cup of chicken broth & 1 cup of water next time.
And by the way, I live in Toronto, Ontario & found both star anise & 5 spice powder in our local bulk store.
    Thanks for sharing!

Jenn, if you find it too salty, you can do as you said or try to reduce the amount of soy sauce too.

Kathlene, there is no substitute for it in making Sweet chicken asado. I would just not add it as an ingredient, but it will affect the flavor of the dish. Anyway, that won’t be too bad though because the outcome will still be good.

Here in England, it comes in different brands, but still the same description which is Five Spice Powder. McCormick might have them, Schwartz do have them. Most Asian stores will have them along with the Star Anise. Hope I helped 🙂

Hi Alma, you should be able to buy 5 spice powder from Filipino or Asian stores depending on your location. Can you tell us where you are at? Maybe our readers might be able to help you.

Thank you for this recipe, I will definitely be trying it! Try using brown jasmine rice instead if you are conscious about your rice intake. I’ve tried doing half white and half brown and I don’t notice the difference after a while. The three ladies brand brown jasmine is very good.
