This Oven Roasted Asparagus recipe is as simple as it can be. I added a bit of parmesan cheese for flavor. You’ll be surprised on the flavor improvement as a result of this small addition.

Aside from its good taste, asparagus is also loaded with vitamins A, C, and K, which all play a part in keeping our immune system strong. It also promotes strong bones and glowing skin. These are just some of the reasons why I always incorporate this to my diet.
How to Make Oven Roasted Asparagus
The steps are straightforward. Even beginners can easily grasp this for sure.

- Prepare the Asparagus for Roasting -Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF. This ensures the asparagus cooks evenly and develops a slight crisp on the outside while staying tender inside.Lay the asparagus in a single layer on a baking tray. Drizzle with olive oil to keep them from drying out, then toss to coat each stalk evenly.
- Season and Add Flavor – Sprinkle salt and ground black pepper to enhance the natural taste. Add minced garlic for depth and Parmesan cheese for a rich, savory finish. Toss everything gently so the seasonings spread evenly.
- Bake to the Perfect Texture – Place the tray in the oven and bake for 13 minutes. This time allows the asparagus to become tender while keeping a slight bite. Overbaking can make them mushy, so keep an eye on them.
- Finish and Serve – Take the tray out of the oven and transfer the asparagus to a serving plate. If you like extra cheesiness, sprinkle more Parmesan on top. Serve warm and enjoy your Oven Roasted Asparagus!
Expert Tips
- Trim before cooking –When preparing to roast asparagus, you should first trim the tough, woody ends. You can either snap them off by hand (they naturally break where the tough part ends) or use a knife to cut the bottoms off.
- Squeeze some lemon – Adding some lemon juice to your roasted asparagus not only adds a delicious zing but also helps to boost the flavor, resulting in a dish that tastes more complex. You can either add the juice before or after roasting and it works great with both fresh lemon juice or zest. Note: Adding lemon juice to asparagus at different stages of the cooking process yields different flavors. For example, if you add lemon juice before roasting, the asparagus absorbs more lemon flavor and becomes more juicy. On the other hand, if you add lemon juice after roasting, you’ll get a more concentrated lemon flavor, as opposed to the light, subtle flavor from adding lemon juice beforehand.
- Season for flavor – When it comes to seasoning your asparagus, simple is best. Salt, pepper, garlic powder, or red pepper flakes can go a long way. For added depth of flavor, you can also try using herbs like thyme, rosemary, or basil. When it comes to seasoning your roasted asparagus, experiment and let your creativity run wild.
- Do not overcook – Overcooked asparagus can become mushy and lose its flavor. It’s important to cook the asparagus so it’s tender but still slightly crisp when you bite into it. If you take it out of the oven and it feels too soft, it’s probably overcooked. I recommend going for firm instead of soft.
How to Trim Asparagus
Trimming asparagus is easy. Just grab a stalk and bend it gentlyโthe woody end will naturally snap off at the right spot. If you want a cleaner look, line up the stalks and slice off the tough ends with a knife.

Now, your asparagus is ready to cook! If you donโt trim asparagus, youโll end up with tough, woody ends that are hard to chew. These parts can be fibrous and stringy, making your dish less enjoyable.
How to Season Asparagus
In our Oven Roasted Asparagus recipe, we start by drizzling olive oil over the stalks to keep them from drying out, then toss them around to make sure theyโre all coated. The oil doesnโt just help with roastingโit also adds a nice, mild flavor that goes well with asparagusโs natural sweetness.

Then, we sprinkle on some salt and black pepper, making sure every piece gets a little love. Since asparagus isnโt salty on its own, the salt brings out its flavor and helps cut any bitterness. It also pulls out a bit of moisture, so the asparagus roasts up just rightโtender inside with a slight crisp on the edges.
How Long to Bake Asparagus
Asparagus usually bakes for 12 to 15 minutes at 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Thinner stalks cook faster, around 10 minutes, while thicker ones might need the full 15 minutes to get tender with crispy edges. Since we coated them in olive oil in our Oven Roasted Asparagus recipe, 13 minutes is the sweet spot for that perfect crisp. Keep an eye on themโovercooked asparagus turns mushy and brings out a stronger, almost sulfur-like taste. You want them bright green and just firm enough for a good bite!

How to Store Roasted Asparagus
If you have to stack roasted asparagus, stick a paper towel between the layers to soak up extra moisture and keep them from getting too soft. But if possible, store them in a single layer with a paper towel at the bottom of an airtight container to help keep them crisp. Let them cool completely before storing, and theyโll stay good in the fridge for up to 4 days.
What to Serve with Roasted Asparagus
Roasted asparagus is usually a side dish that goes great with meats, pasta, or rice. So, let me throw in a few meat dishes that pair perfectly with it!

- Cedar Plank Salmon goes great with roasted asparagus because the salmonโs smoky, slightly sweet flavor evens out the asparagusโs earthy, roasted taste.
- Sous Vide Steak pairs perfectly with the crispy bite of roasted asparagus. The steakโs rich, buttery flavor matches the asparagusโs earthy, roasted taste, making every bite feel just right. Plus, since sous vide steak cooks low and slow, you can pop the asparagus in the oven while you finish the steak in a hot panโperfect timing! And hey, why not pour a glass of red wine? Surprise your partner and make it a meal to remember!
- Garlic Shrimp Pasta is the only pasta I really think works best with asparagus because the garlicky, buttery sauce wraps around each bite just right. And letโs not forget the juicy shrimpโit adds a fresh, sweet contrast that makes the whole dish even better!
