This pork chao fan, for instance, carries all the Filipino-Chinese flavors we love and more!

Chao Fan Fried Rice

Pork Chao Fan is essentially lending our unique Filipino touch to a classic Chinese dish –– fried rice. This flavorful and filling meal consists of a chewy, delicious pork belly and rice you’ve tossed in a myriad of ingredients. From carrots to green peas, eggs to green onions, this dish is practically a meal in itself, without the need for side dishes! Pork Chao Fan is a great way to make use of the leftover rice that may be taking up space in your fridge. 

This fried rice has become such a popular option in Filipino Chinese cuisine. If you’ve ever had a hankering for affordable but delicious Chinese fast food, you’ve probably ordered from Chowking at least once. Of course, you can never go wrong with a perfectly good egg roll. And the Filipino response to this other Chinese fast food delicacy is the crunchy, meaty lumpiang shanghai! A delicious mix of ground pork, onions, and carrots wrapped up in a deliciously crispy wrapper, lumpiang shanghai is a great companion to the flavorful chao fan. This beautiful golden brown roll isn’t just popular with Chinese food either; it’s practically a staple at Filipino parties and celebrations. The mix of tastes and textures in your mouth is practically a match made in heaven!

  • Pork Dumplings

It would be blasphemous to enjoy Chinese cuisine without a dumpling or two in the mix! Dimsum is one of the classic representatives of Chinese food. Meaty, compact, and undeniably tasty, these steamed dumplings consist of a tasty ground pork and other nutritious vegetables, giving it a crunchy, dynamic taste. And once you dip it in this savory, umami sauce, you’ve made your dish all the better! Pork dumplings will go perfectly with your yummy pork chao fan, making for a super hearty meal. 

How to Make Pork Chao Fan

Pork Chao Fan is an incredibly easy dish to make. Like many other fried rice dishes, this recipe consists of tossing rice and ingredients together until all flavors have been fully absorbed. This combination of textures is what truly sets this tasty dish apart. 

Like with any recipe, you must first prepare all the ingredients for your pork chao fan. Chop your carrots and green onions, and mince an onion, too. 2 eggs must be beaten and whisked, as well. Other ingredients include your ground pork or grilled pork belly, leftover rice, green peas, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil.

Let’s cook this delightful pork chao fan together! In a wok, heat 5 tablespoons of cooking oil and add in your beaten eggs. Fry your eggs, fully cooking them like they’re scrambled eggs, then set them aside once done.

With the remaining cooking oil, sauté your minced onion pieces until they soften, then add in your ground pork! Cook while stirring until your pork turns medium brown. Afterwards, pour in all the sauces of your pork chao fan: your hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Then, stir them together, incorporating them well.

Your carrots and leftover rice go into the wok next. Stir fry your pork chao fan for two minutes, tossing until you’ve fully mixed all your ingredients. Add your green peas and green onions and cook for a minute more, tossing your pork chao fan together. The smell in the air is sure to make your mouth water by now!

Lastly, take the chopped fried egg pieces and add them into your pork chao fan, seasoning the dish with salt and ground white pepper to taste. When you’re fully satisfied, turn the heat off and transfer your pork chao fan to a serving bowl. Serve your pork chao fan warm, and share and enjoy it with the rest of your family!

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces ground pork or grilled pork belly
  • 4 cups rice leftover
  • ½ cup carrot chopped
  • ¾ cup green peas
  • 1 piece onion minced
  • 2 pieces eggs beaten
  • ½ cup green onions chopped
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil
  • Salt and ground white pepper to taste
  • 5 tablespoons cooking oil

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a wok. Add beaten eggs. Fry until eggs are fully cooked. Remove eggs from the pan. Set aside.
  • Sauté onion using remaining oil until it softens.
  • Add ground pork. Cook while stirring until pork turns medium brown.
  • Pour soy sauce, Sesame oil, and hoisin sauce into the wok. Stir.
  • Add carrots and leftover rice. Stir-fry for 2 minutes. Toss until all ingredients are well distributed.
  • Add green peas and green onions. Cook for 1 minute.
  • Add the chopped fried egg and then season with salt and ground white pepper.
  • Serve warm. Share and enjoy!
