Roast Beef Sandwich
Hello everyone! I’m excited to release this first post about our new section here in Panlasang Pinoy which I am calling “School Lunch Ideas”. This section is all about different school lunches that I make for my kids. Through this new section, you will be able to pick different food ideas that you can apply for your child’s school lunch – or even your own.
I am envisioning this section to hold a wide array of lunch ideas that ranges from the simplest sandwich and rice meals all the way to sushi and other more sophisticated lunches. Just like in our recipe posts, I encourage everyone to share their thoughts and ideas because everyone benefits from them and it gets the conversation going.
This post is all about Roast Beef Sandwich. This sandwich can be expensive and tedious to prepare; but, you can save a lot of money while enjoy your great-tasting sandwich with the right knowhow and a little imagination.

I am a huge fan of sub (submarine sandwiches) and that is the reason why I chose this oblong roll bread. There are different types of oblong roll bread and it comes in different lengths; what I got was a regular French oblong roll.
I was saying a while ago that you can save money while enjoying your meal. That is absolutely true and this sandwich is the proof. Instead of buying pre-cooked roast beef in the deli shop (price ranges from $5 to $10 a pound), I bought 2 lbs of beef (it was on sale for $2.49 a pound) and I made my own roast beef by following our Roast Beef Recipe post.
If you will make your own roast beef, the key here is to slice the meat as thin as possible. You can do it easily with a sharp knife. Based on experience, I find it easy to slice meats when they are fresh from the fridge. The other ingredients are pretty much common: lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. I used iceberg lettuce for this sandwich and topped it with freshly sliced tomatoes. As for the cheese, I would recommend you to use your favorite type of cheese; although, I used American cheese for this sandwich. As for the spread, any type of spread will do as long as you like it. Olive oil based mayonnaise is the generic spread that I use most of the time.
