Burger Steak

Burger Steak or hamburger steak is a popular fast food menu in the Philippines. Flavorful burger patties (usually made from beef) are pan fried and topped with gravy and sliced button mushrooms.

Although this looks similar to Salisbury steak, there are some differences in the ingredients and composition which gives this dish the right to have a name of its own.

Even if this is not an authentic Filipino food, it has been well accepted and became part of the menu of most Filipinos. This might be attributed to the sheer marketing campaign of a well known fast food chain or simply because of its delicious taste.

Unlike others who serve mashed potato or macaroni and cheese, rice is the most popular side dish for this meal when you are in the Philippines.

Burger Steak Recipe


  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 pack onion soup and dip mix (or 1/4 cup condensed French onion soup)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 piece raw egg
  • 3/4 cup button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups KFC style gravy
  • 1/4 cup water (this is not needed if condensed French onion soup is used)

Cooking Procedure

  1. Combine onion soup and dip mix with water and mix well. Set aside.
  2. Combine ground beef, salt, ground black pepper, mixture of water and onion soup and dip mix, breadcrumbs, and egg. Mix thoroughly to distribute the ingredients properly.
  3. Divide the mixture into individual serving pieces and create a burger patty with each piece. This can be done by rolling the mixture into balls and flatten them on an even surface.
  4. Heat a frying pan or skillet and put-in the patties. Cook each side for 3 to 3 1/2 minutes. Continue doing this step until all of the patties are cooked. Set aside.
  5. Remove excess oil from the same frying pan or skillet where the patties were cooked.
  6. Sauté the sliced mushrooms for 2 minutes then add the gravy and stir. Cook the gravy for another minute.
  7. Transfer the burger patties to a serving plate and top with KFC style gravy with mushrooms.
  8. Serve. Share and enjoy!

    Hi Vanj! What would be a good substitute for the onion soup and dip mix? Wala kasi akong makitang ganito dito sa Pinas. I’d really like to cook this for my kid though.

  6. Hi, cant find onion soup mix and dip(i just google it and found it was lipton brand). What ive got here in australia is just a french onion soup mix, pede po kaya ito?

    great recipe…I have tasted also that of Jollibees version..but I suggested that the picture of the burger steak posted above would be great if you include vegetables to enhance the beauty of the picture…like tomatoes,brocolli,carrots and potato to add a burst of color to the picture above.

    kuya, ano po pangremedyo dun s butter-y na flavor? iba2 po ba tlga ung tapang ng lasa ng butter..sinunod q nmn po ung recipe eh..sakto po 3 tbsp

    • Hi Nesty, if you feel that its too buttery try decreasing the butter to half. Hope this helps.

    • hi nesty! mangengealam ako ha? hehehe! ano ba yung brand na ginamit mo? depende kasi sa brand ng butter eh. yung dito kasi sa atin sa pinas,may kakaibang lasa, after trying & testing most butter na available satin, i found that queensland is my best bet. u might want to try.

      jan, onion soup is not available in the Philippines. i went to all duty free shops in Clark, grabe, didn’t find any, may it be in can or yung dried tulad ng gamit ni sir vanjo. i did my own onion soup & it’s perfect! just find some recipe for onion soup sa net…

      sir vanjo, i have a picky eater & she only eats “the famous’ food chain’s” burger steak that’s why i tried this, the first time i tasted it these are the words that came from my mouth: holy smokes! onion soup lang pala ang sikreto ng J——e!!! hahaha! thanks so much for this wonderful recipe, love it!!
