A lot of love has gone around for the classic cheese sandwich, which has its natural charm from a delicate, salty flavor. But what if you added just the tiniest hint of spice, and a uniquely pepper-y flavor? The result is yet another fan favorite for yummy afternoon snacks or merienda— the Cheese Pimiento Sandwich!
Ingredients That You Will Need
Ingredients in Cheese Pimiento Sandwich
Leftover ham
When you’re coming from a special occasion, or the much-awaited holiday season, you’re bound to have some ham leftover from all the festivities. That’s actually perfect for this recipe as we need 4 ounces of this, cut into slices. We’re integrating this into our sandwich for a boost in protein! This is also great for giving your body more minerals like iron, selenium and zinc.
Bread
Also have 3 slices of bread ready for the sandwich. You can use any type you would like— from the classic white bread to whole wheat. Just make sure that it is of the sliced variant as we will be putting our spread on this.
Pimiento cheese ingredients:
Lady’s Choice mayonnaise
A lot of sandwich spreads are not complete without this essential element. Have 1 cup of Lady’s Choice mayonnaise for an added creamy texture and rich taste.
Edam cheese
Speaking of the holidays, this is pretty much a staple in a Filipino Christmas dinner. And one of the best ways to make use of your favorite queso de bola is by creating some delightful Cheese Pimiento Sandwiches! Use 1 ½ cups of this that you have grated.
Cream cheese
We also can’t forget about our 2 ounces of softened cream cheese. While this is known for the great moisture it can give to your spread, you also can’t forget about the perfect amount of sourness it can provide. This works in perfect contrast with our pimento peppers, and the sweetness of the ham.
Pimento peppers
And to really bring the flavor of our recipe to life, get 7 ounces of pimento peppers that we will chop up. This is great to integrate in your meals as it is rich in nutrients like Vitamin A so that you can boost your immune system. This is also great for your eye health so you can reduce the risk of macular degeneration. These are also a good source of Vitamin C to protect you against certain illnesses like cardiovascular disease, hypertension and even cancer.
Garlic powder
We’ll also need ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder just to provide a lot more depth to the flavor of the spread.
Onion powder
Another seasoning will help— ¼ teaspoon of onion powder. This can really make your dish more flavorful, plus it is almost always the perfect addition to any spread with mayonnaise as its base. Just take a look at my Egg Sandwich Spread recipe!
Salt and ground black pepper
And we’re sprinkling in just the right amount of salt and ground black pepper. The amount totally depends on you so you can add as much as you like!
What does cheese pimiento sandwich taste like?
You may be familiar with the iteration of this dish that utilizes a store-bought spread. You can expect a similar set of flavors for our recipe, but of course, with an altogether richer taste. That’s because we don’t utilize just any type of cheese for this. You get the ideal amount of soft creaminess from softened cream cheese. And the unique savory flavor of queso de bola definitely heightens the taste of this dish too.
If you’re not a fan of food with a lot of heat, there’s no reason to worry either. Pimento peppers are known for being one of the least spicy kinds of pepper. They offer the tiniest kick, along with a bit of sweetness. And to top it all off, we have a bit of meat in our ham so that the dish can be more filling and satisfying.
How to Make Cheese Pimiento Sandwich
Creating the pimiento cheese spread
Putting the ingredients together – In a container that will fit all of these components, put your Lady’s Choice mayonnaise, edam cheese, cream cheese, pimento peppers, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and ground black pepper.
Mixing the components – Make sure that everything is evenly distributed.
Assembling the sandwich
Preparing the bread – Start by trimming the bread slices’ edges, and get rid of the crusts.
Spreading the pimiento cheese mixture – Now put a generous amount of the spread we made earlier on one side of your bread slice.
Adding the ham – Now you can place a slice of ham over the side of the bread with pimiento spread. Then top this with another bread slice with the pimiento side facing down.
Finishing touches – All you have to do now is cut the bread in half so you can shape them into triangles
Time to serve – Afterwards, you can take your serving container of choice, and plate the sandwiches as you would like!
