Classic Beef with Broccoli Recipe

A serving of beef and broccoli packs a punch of health benefits. The beef provides protein for muscle repair and essential nutrients like iron and B vitamins for energy and immune support. Meanwhile, broccoli is rich in vitamins C and K, fiber, and antioxidants, which boost immunity, support bone health, aid digestion, and promote overall well-being.

Last time, we cooked up some delicious beef stroganoff, so let’s keep the beef theme going with a simpler recipe—beef and broccoli! This dish is a popular choice among Filipinos because it’s easy to prepare and doesn’t take much time. It’s also a hit with kids, thanks to the flavorful combination of beef and broccoli. The broccoli soaks up all the delicious beef juices, making it appealing even to picky eaters!

Classic beef and broccoli

How to Cook Beef and Broccoli

Prepare the beef

  • First, season your thinly sliced beef with salt, making sure each piece gets a good coating.
  • Set it aside while you whip up the sauce for our beef broccoli.

Prepare the sauce

  • Mix all the sauce ingredients together in a bowl, giving it a good stir.
  • Set it aside for later. It’s so easy, even the sauce can’t wait to chill out and relax for a bit!

cook the broccoli

  • Get your pan nice and hot with a tablespoon of cooking oil.
  • After that, toss in the broccoli and stir-fry for about 20 seconds.
  • Then, add a couple of tablespoons of water, cover the pan, and let the broccoli steam until the water evaporates.
  • Transfer your beautifully cooked broccoli to a serving bowl and set it aside for our beef broccoli later.

sizzle the beef

  • In that same pan (no need to wash it—it allows the flavors from the stir-fried broccoli to infuse into the beef dish, plus it saves time and minimizes cleanup), heat up the rest of the cooking oil over medium-high heat.
  • Next, throw in your seasoned beef and stir-fry until it’s nicely browned.

add the sauce and simmer

  • Quickly stir the sauce mixture to ensure all the ingredients are well combined, then pour it into the pan with the beef.
  • Moving on, give our beef broccoli a gentle stir and lower the heat to a simmer. Keep stirring until the sauce starts to thicken up.

add the broccoli and serve!

  • Add the cooked broccoli to the pan, stirring to coat it evenly with the sauce.
  • Lastly, sprinkle toasted sesame seeds over the dish.
  • Present the platter and let’s feast!

What is beef and broccoli?

Growing up, beef and broccoli wasn’t a dish I had often since I was more accustomed to hearty beef bulalo or even unconventional dishes like corned beef sinigang! However, with the rise of online recipes, more and more people are discovering that beef and broccoli is one of the easiest and most satisfying beef recipes out there.

Beef and broccoli

So, what do we need to make this dish? Let’s find out!

  • 1 pound beef sirloin — Thinly sliced for quick and even cooking, the beef adds meaty goodness to every bite.
  • 4 cups broccoli florets — Provide a satisfying crunch and balance to the dish.
  • ½ teaspoon salt — Enhances the flavors of the ingredients without overpowering them.
  • 2 tablespoons water — Helps to steam the broccoli.

How to Serve Beef Broccoli

My Beef and broccoli recipe

To round out the meal, serve up some steamed white rice or fried rice on the side. It’s the perfect way to complement the savory flavors and tender textures of the beef and broccoli. For extra munchies, consider tossing in some crispy egg rolls—they’re always a hit as an appetizer or side dish. If you’re craving noodles, whip up a batch of lo mein with beef and broccoli for a noodle-tastic twist! Enjoy digging in!

Notes

How to Enjoy Broccoli Safely While Taking Blood Thinners
If you’re on blood-thinning medications like warfarin (Coumadin) or other anticoagulants, monitor your intake of vitamin K-rich foods such as broccoli. You don’t need to avoid broccoli entirely, but consuming it in moderation can help maintain steady vitamin K levels.
Generally, limiting your intake to about 1 cup of broccoli florets per day can help prevent significant fluctuations in vitamin K levels. However, changes in vitamin K intake might affect the effectiveness of your medications. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice on managing your diet while on blood thinners.
