Who doesn’t love party food? Whether it’s a dinner party with your closest friends, or a celebration for your kids’ birthday, certain plates of party food are guaranteed to be surefire crowd pleasers. Among them, of course, is the humble hotdog. Who has been to a party without catching sight of some good old fashioned hotdogs on a stick with some marshmallows? Or even pigs in a blanket, if you’re looking for a more “upgraded” version? And for those at more mature affairs, a charcuterie board is never complete without sausages and cold cuts! Indeed, hotdogs and sausages are almost always present at every party. But are you on the prowl for ways to make this party fare even more memorable? Check out these tornado franks; they may be exactly what you’re looking for!

tornado franks

What are Tornado Franks?

Tornado Franks are a toss up between a sausage sandwich and just eating it on a stick. They consist of delicious and flavorful CDO Chicken Franks and tender, mildly sweet dough strings. It gets its name from the way the strings form a spiral around your meaty sausage, almost giving it the appearance of a tornado itself. This food is comfortable and familiar, but with a pleasantly memorable twist; we’re sure you and your family will love it, too! Kids, particularly, will find it difficult to resist the appeal of these tornado franks!

What kind of sausage is in Tornado Franks?

This delicious party fare is made of CDO Chicken Franks. Chicken franks are essentially, as the name suggests, prime chicken meat that mixes with a blend of herbs and spices. This gives your chicken that extra savory, extra smoky flavor that we love from franks. Making them out of chicken is also a lighter and healthier alternative than the usual pork or beef fare. For those who love hotdogs but want to enjoy it a step above the norm, chicken franks are definitely the way to go. You won’t want your sausages any other way again!

What can I serve with Tornado Franks?

As a tasty snack, tornado franks on their own can be quite filling. You can opt to douse your smoky sausages in any dipping sauce of your choice, from barbecue sauce to even vinegar for a nice contrast. Additionally, you can opt to serve your tornado franks with some equally timeless French fries! Crispy, golden, and easy to make, you can skip on the delivery and takeout and make these fries from the comfort of your own home. They’d make the perfect partner to your hotdogs, and will surely please your kids, too.

Another option, though still down the potato route, is a good old potato salad! Perfect with meaty dishes like this one, this potato salad is creamy with a mix of sweet and savory flavors. The additional pineapple is a nice touch that’ll counter the taste of your Tornado Franks well. It’s the perfect balance of salty and sweet, and your guests simply won’t get enough of it!

how to make tornado franks

Making the dough for Tornado Franks

Another great thing about tornado franks is how simple and easy it is to make! In no time at all, you and your loved ones will be able to enjoy this tasty treat. In fact, most of your prep will be allocated to making the dough itself — but even then, this is simple! By using store bought pancake mix, you’re saving time and effort and making this dish even more convenient for everyone!

All you need for your dough are half a cup of all-purpose flour, half a cup of pancake mix, and some tablespoons of water. Combine all of these ingredients into a bowl, and mix them thoroughly. The goal is to get a nice and smooth texture, so keep kneading until you’ve achieved the same. Then, take the dough you’ve made and cut it up into four to six parts. Roll them up until you’ve made the dough strings we’ll be spiraling around your Chicken Franks.

How to assemble your Tornado Franks

Now that you have your dough strings at the ready, it’s time to assemble your Tornado Franks! Take each of your CDO Chicken Franks and skew them on bamboo skewers. Make a spiral incision along your sausage, so there’s a bit of an indent. Then, fill each incision with dough strings. This may sound complicated, but don’t worry; you’ll get the hang of it! Check out this video for a visual on how to get those incisions just right.

After heating a cup of cooking oil in a pan, fry your Tornado Franks for 3 minutes each. Make sure to turn them over every once in a while so you can cook the sausage all the way through. When you’re done, remove them from the pan and let them cool down. You can opt to line your plate with paper towels or put it on a wire rack first to remove any excess oil.
